 Mikaelyan  Lab

Studying Life At The Edge of Decay

The Mikaelyan Lab investigates how insects and their microbial partners break down dead plant and animal material. Focusing on wood-, litter-, and carrion-feeding detritivores — including key decomposers and economically important pests — we study the physiological constraints and symbiotic strategies that enable efficient resource use. Our work traces how these adaptations emerge, interact, and scale to influence decomposition dynamics and the ecological fate of organic matter.

The Mikaelyan Lab values intellectual curiosity, scientific rigor, and open dialogue. We are committed to creating a lab culture where diverse perspectives are encouraged. All members are encouraged to contribute, challenge ideas, and grow as scientists through honest inquiry and mutual respect.
